KUVO’s Kaleidoscope of Sound — 2024 Festival Music All Day!
KUVO’s Spring Membership Campaign comes at the perfect time, filling KUVO’s tank for a summer full of music festivals and outdoor events! On Friday, May 3, KUVO’s airwaves will be filled with music recorded at festivals, and from artists appearing at festivals here in Colorado and around the world.
Some of the truly outstanding festival recordings in KUVO’s library include the Dexter Payne Quintet at Five Points, Rare Silk at the Greeley Jazz Festival, Stephane Grappelli at Corby (UK), Gerry Mulligan and Maria Schneider at the North Sea Jazz Festival, and Newport recordings with Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, Louis Armstrong, and the stellar new release from Nina Simone (1966).
Looking at the 2024 lineup of festivals, consider the amazing lineup at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (concluding this weekend), including a spectacular array of jazz, blues, soul and roots musicians (Jon Batiste, Trombone Shorty, Earth, Wind & Fire, Irma Thomas, Charles Lloyd, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Samara Joy, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, John Boutté, Nicholas Payton and so many more). At the Five Points Jazz Festival (June 8), Purnell Steen and the Five Points Ambassadors, Tenia Nelson Trio, Ritmo Jazz Latino, and others will perform.
JAS Aspen Snowmass has two days of summer events, with most of the jazz and blues stars playing at the “June Experience” (June 20-23), including Orquesta Akokan, Christian McBride, Katie Thiroux, and a new bluesman on the scene Cedric Burnside.
The Newport Jazz Festival (August 2-4) features a mind-blowing range of styles and generations, including Kamasi Washington, Kenny Barron, Artemis, Meshell Ndegeocello, and more. The following weekend at the mountain paradise of Telluride, Colo, at the Telluride Jazz Festival — top names include Takuya Kuroda and The Meters. Labor Day weekend a few mountain ranges over is the Vail Jazz Party, with workshop faculty Lewis Nash, Wycliffe Gordon, John Clayton, Ann Hampton Calloway, and others.
By the time we get to late September, Monterey Jazz Festival fans will be treated to some of the biggest names in jazz, including Robert Glasper, Jason Moran, Brandee Younger, Pedrito Martinez, and Stanley Clarke.
Music from these artists and more will be on KUVO’s playlist on “Festival Friday,” May 3…All Day!!
