Join us on the last Tuesday of every month at Spangalang Brewery for a KUVO Jazz Odyssey Present Live DJ series featuring DJ Love on July 30 from 8 to 10 p.m. Open to the public! Stop by the KUVO table and say hello!

Get to know DJ Love:

How did you get started as a DJ?  Back in the late 80s, I would record the weekend radio hot mixes and also use my collection and make pause mixes with a double cassette player so that all the homies would have nonstop mixes for our cars and parties. I would live in DJ booths in the early Denver rave scene and watch and learn. I was given some early chances opening teen club nights and playing alongside DJ buddies at sorority parties. After that, nothing would be the same.

What inspires your music selection and style?  Since most of my career has been spent in club/bar/party environments, one thing has always motivated me above all else: making women dance. Do that, and everything else falls into place. As far as my style, I guess I’m always trying to play music that is going to evoke an emotion. I want people to FEEL when they’re out there dancing and singing with me. So I gravitate to that music that hits those soul buttons in each of us. Some buttons are in the heart, some are you in your feet. And some are in the ass, and I’m just here to make you shake it.

Can you share a memorable or challenging experience from a gig? Let’s see, how about hitting the wrong switch in a DJ booth, during a set, and blowing the main fuses that shut half of the bar off, including the sound system? Yeah, I did that once.

How do you handle requests from the audience during a set? I love taking a brief moment to connect with folx who want to come up and say hi and sure, I’ll listen to and even play requests…if they’re good. I will absolutely ignore you if you hold your phone up in my face though.

What’s your favorite part about being a DJ? Every gig is an opportunity for me to be a part of someone else’s special memory. There’s nothing like hearing from someone months and years later that they saw me at a show and that I blew them away or that they’ll never forget that song I played and so many other things I’ve heard. You never know who you’re going to reach or how, and that keeps things exciting. It keeps me committed to always playing with my full heart in it.

Can you talk about any upcoming projects or collaborations you’re excited about?  It’s all top secret, haha! Honestly, I’m still super proud of my ’80s party which is in its 5th year. That’s my baby. Beyond that, I’m really enjoying collaborating with folx that I love, respect, and admire, and doing events that I believe in. I’m all over town any given month playing some really great parties.

Artists I’m likely playing:
D’Angelo
Jamiroquai
Erykah
Omar
Earth Wind & Fire
