KUVO JAZZ celebrates National Latina Day!
KUVO Jazz celebrates National Latina Day on August 20 with music, profiles, and feature content that spotlights Latinas! Founded in 2015 by Dolores Alvarez Castilla with the Facebook group Latinas Empowering Latinas, National Latina Day is set aside to honor and recognize the cultural and civic contributions of Latinas everywhere!
Audio vignettes throughout the day will spotlight notable Colorado Latinas like educator Lena Archuleta, publisher Pauline Rivera, authors, musicians, and the Latinas who serve in the non-profit sector or hold public office. KUVO’s music mix on August 20 will highlight the many Latina artists who are a regular part of KUVO’s Jazz and Latin playlist.
Tina Cartagena, vice president of Special Projects and Cultural Experiences for Rocky Mountain Public Media (RMPM) has been part of the KUVO staff for nearly 30 years. Also recognized as a “Corn Mother” by History Colorado, Tina’s contribution to the community is notable. “It’s an honor to hear these stories and discover more about these amazing women,” said Cartagena.
Ayana Contreras, Rocky Mountain Public Media’s general manager of Radio and program director for The Drop 104.7 said, “Latinas are culture bearers with contributions to our daily lives and to our community at large. KUVO is happy to participate in National Latina Day because radio reaches a wide and diverse audience with real-world examples of excellence, strength, passion, and brilliance.”
Florence Hernandez-Ramos, founder of KUVO and ex-officio member of the Rocky Mountain Public Media board of directors said, “We’re recognizing Latinas in the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame, the Latina Legacy Circle, Latinas Give, Latinas First Foundation, women in media and other organizations because their work and their accomplishments deserve more coverage. Our young Latinas need to know these stories of achievement, and we’re all stronger when we celebrate these women.”
Tune in for the celebration!
