KUVO JAZZ Celebrates 39 Years of Community, Culture, and Music – Happy Anniversary!
KUVO Jazz proudly celebrates its 39th anniversary on August 29, 2024, a milestone that serves as a prelude to the BIG 4-0 next year. Since 1985, when KUVO first signed on the airwaves after years of grassroots organizing, fundraising, FCC approvals, LP-gathering, and volunteer recruiting, it has been a vital part of Denver’s cultural landscape. As the first Latino-controlled, non-commercial radio station in Denver—and one of the few in the United States—KUVO continues to play a pioneering role in championing diverse voices and preserving the legacy of jazz music from Denver to Cuba.
We invite you to tune in to our on-air anniversary celebrations kicking off with The Morning Set host and longtime KUVO voice, Carlos Lando, presenting a special “My Back Pages” segment, marking the centennial of legendary singer Dinah Washington. Mid-morning Jazz host Tree King will share her personal journey at KUVO, reflecting on her arrival in 1987 and the station’s evolution since then.
This year, KUVO also shares its anniversary with a lineup of jazz luminaries, including saxophonists Charlie Parker and Benny Maupin, bassist-composer Meshell Ndegeocello, and Colorado Music Hall of Fame inductee, pianist Ellyn Rucker, which you can expect to hear throughout the day.
Adding to the celebration, KUVO is releasing not one, but two special sessions on its YouTube and Twitch channels. At noon, tune in for a performance by the Ben Markley Quintet, followed by a re-mixed session at 7 p.m. featuring the chill-hop, lo-fi band Manycolors. The latter session celebrates the music of legendary hip-hop producer J Dilla.
KUVO is thriving thanks to the unwavering support of the community. If you don’t catch our gratitude on the airwaves, know that we deeply appreciate every listener, volunteer, and supporter who has helped us grow over the years. Thank you for being part of the KUVO family.
