Kenny Barron-Dave Holland Trio: Without Deception | March 2020 CD of the Month

Kenny Barron is a veteran pianist and composer who is highly regarded as one of the best living jazz piano players. Dave Holland is an amazing talent of the bass; he has been influencing fellow bassists for over 50 years. Both gifted musicians are NEA Jazz Masters, Mr. Barron was elected in 2010 and Mr. Holland in 2017. This is their first recording together since their highly acclaimed duo session, The Art of Conversation, one of 2014’s top 5 albums. For their newest outing, Without Deception, Kenny and Dave recruited the innovator drummer, Johnathan Blake. This marvelous trifecta lives up to the title of the session as they blend their skills seamlessly engaging in a musical journey of the highest caliber with no gimmicks, just pure prowess.  Best of all, there’s no intruding on each other’s majestic playing. Kenny Barron-Dave Holland Trio featuring Johnathan Blake Without Deception has been issued on Holland’s Dare 2 Records label.

For this release recorded in Mt. Vernon, NY, Kenny contributes 4 compositions while Dave adds 2 of his songs, Holland also is the producer. The other 4 entries include lesser known tunes of Duke Ellington and Thelonious S. Monk. One of the most engaging aspects of the trio’s playing is that each member is given their fair share to shine on their own as well as demonstrating their amazing ability to play flawlessly together.
