Jazz Tributes For Two Cities-The Motor City & The Big Apple | New Music Monday
Few cities have produced as many jazz greats as Detroit and its surrounding suburbs, in fact beyond jazz, the Motor City has always been fertile ground for producing numerous gifted and influential musicians in a wide array of music categories. Blue Note Records releases a new compilation CD in tribute to Motown; Detroit Jazz City. The recording features 9 selections from different artists that hail from Detroit. Proceeds from the sale of the CD will be donated to Focus: Hope, a non-profit offering Detroiters education, opportunity and community.
Also on tap this week is the debut of an amazing organ player from Nouméa a.k.a New Caledonia, a small island of the Pacific Rim, Michel Benebig who is now a resident of San Francisco. For his first recording Michel is joined by Carlos Lockett on guitar and Lewis Nash on drums with guest Houston Person on tenor saxophone.
We’ll also share new arrivals by the D-Stringz ensemble, Jean Luc Ponty-violin, Biréli Lagréne-guitar, Stanley Clarke-bass and Steve Shehan on percussion. We’ll hear the US debut of the British-Nigerian singer, Ola Onabulé, saxophonist Cory Weeds with the Jeff Hamilton Trio and several others to hopefully enhance your Monday afternoon beginning at Noon, MTN time on Lunchtime at the Oasis.
