This is Jazz News, a look at what’s news in jazz, music, and the arts.

A snag hit the redevelopment plans for the old El Chapultepec building at 2oth and Market in downtown Denver. At this month’s meeting, the Denver Lower Downtown Design Review Commission voted 5-1 to reject the application from The Monfort Companies to redevelop the building that houses the old El Chapultepec Club and the Giggling Grizzly Bar. The issue was not the famous corner or the cantina sign. Still, Ryan Huff with Denver Community Planning and Development told Fox31 the Commission asked for changes to the Giggling Grizzly side of the project, including revisions to the rooftop, roof deck, and window plans, so the building maintains the neighborhood’s historic character. The developers say they will revise the plan and re-submit the application. (SOURCE: KDVR video: Plans to update the Chapultepec Building)

U.K.-based award-winning tenor saxophonist, bandleader, and composer Nubya Garcia releases her second album, “Odyssey,” on September 20. It’s her second release on Concord, and Garcia takes her first turn orchestrating strings, and arranging for guest vocalists esperanza spalding, Richie Seivwright, and Georgia Anne Muldrow. The official press release says Garcia has fallen back in love with the composition process.

Garcia’s music is showing up on television shows, podcasts, and in video games, and she’s hitting a few European clubs as a DJ. (SOURCES: Nubya Garcia.com/; Concord)
