This is Jazz News, a look at what’s news in jazz, music and the arts.

A centennial celebration of Texas trumpeter-composer Kenny Dorham is planned for this coming Sunday, August 25 at Dazzle in downtown Denver, hosted by Colorado-based trumpeter Derek Banach and a top-flight lineup of Colorado talent. Dorham, whom we lost at age 48 in 1972, would have turned 100 on August 30. (SOURCE: Gift of Jazz)

NPR’s Tiny Desk concerts have been on a tear lately. The home concert from Milton Nascimento’s living room with esperanza spalding and friends was simply magical. The Tiny Desk with the solo piano of Chucho Valdés at their Washington D.C. studios dropped a week ago. It is breathtaking to watch his right hand on automatic melody and watch his left hand create new rhythms and bass lines. And to hear both hands work simpatico. Wow.

And just last Friday, Tiny Desk posted a session with trumpeter-vocalist-composer-producer Keyon Harrold in a multi-genre set of free jazz, hip hop with Nick Grant, vocalist Tiana Major9, STOUT, Malaya, Robert Glasper, and others. When Harrold appears at Dazzle in mid-September, whoever he brings with him, I think you can expect a very diverse, engaging, 2024 music experience. (SOURCE: NPR/Tiny Desk Concerts)
