Jazz News: Adult music camp, holographic Taj Mahal, Stevie Wonder commences
Here’s a music camp for adults this summer, in the beautiful environs of Summit County, Colorado. Music at The Summit hosts a week for Concert Band music, and a week for a jazz band, both in June. The faculty is made up of accomplished music educators from around the country, including Colorado’s Darren Kramer at the trombone.
Rehearsals are in Frisco, and the final performances will be in Breckenridge at the Riverwalk Center. No refunds after June 1. Programs, downloads, and other details at MusicAtTheSummit.com.

Last Friday (May 17, 2024) we noted the 82nd birthday of Taj Mahal, but he was also honored earlier this month at the Blues Hall of Fame in Memphis. Hours before the 45th annual Blues Music Awards, an interactive, AI-powered hologram of Taj Mahal was unveiled at the Blues Hall of Fame Museum.
It’s only the second holographic exhibit of its kind in America. It uses new technology from the company Holoconnects to render a life-like image that can answer questions, talk about exhibits, and play instruments. Taj Mahal had to sit and talk for several hours for the technology to scan his likeness and voice. The Blues Foundation is expected to add holograms of Bobby Rush and Keb’ Mo’ later. Commencement news from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. At this Wednesday’s ceremony, the graduate speaker will be Stevie Wonder, and Stevie will receive an Honorary Doctorate at the Universitywide Commencement on May 23.
And another Stevie Wonder note, the travel website Travel Noire reports Wonder was granted citizenship by the nation of Ghana, fulfilling his wish that goes back to the 1970s. Last week’s ceremony was conducted by Ghana’s president Nana Akufo-Addo at Jubilee House in Accra. (SOURCES: Peabody Academics Graduation; Stevie Wonder / Ghana Citizenship)
