Jazz & Abstract | Apr 7 thru May 4
Jazz & Abstract is photography by Susan Gatschet, paintings by Nijole Rasmussen and vocals by Wendy Fopeano. Opening reception Friday, April 7 – 6 to 10pm.
“Photography is a passion of mine. For as long as I can remember I have carried a camera around with me and it all started with a Polaroid. Moving to Colorado in 1988 was a stepping stone that moved me in directions I would have never imagined. I’ve always attended concerts and my camera is my constant companion on these musical journeys. Hiking and snowshoeing also present many opportunities to capture moments in time that are peaceful and breathtaking. Sometimes people don’t notice or can’t find the time to enjoy the beauty around them. I want my photographs to be a reminder that beauty surrounds us.” Susan Gatschet is the host of Take Note on M-F from 1 to 4pm on KUVO 89.3 FM. This year she celebrates 20 years at KUVO.
“I paint with my soul and then discover that life itself has already painted there a long time ago, that my soul and life are one….”– Nijole Rasmussen was born and raised in Lithuania. Since 1992 she has lived in Denver, Colorado, USA. The journey through life has taken her to photography, and eventually to painting, which has been her passion for the last 5 years. With some guidance from professional artists, she is mainly self-taught and derives her inspiration from nature, travels, and love of art. She loves to read and does so in several languages, and enjoys writing poetry. Nijole has had many exhibitions in Denver and one solo exhibition in Chicago.
Wendy Fopeano was raised in a musical family in Kansas City, Missouri. She was primarily an instrumentalist before she discovered her love of improvising with her voice. She moved to Colorado in 1987 and has sung at festivals, concert halls, and clubs from Dazzle Jazz in Denver to the Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai, India. From 2001 to 2011 she hosted her own jazz show on Denver’s jazz89 KUVO and interviewed a number of jazz greats including: Tom Harrell, Christian McBride, Stanley Clarke and Chick Corea. She has released two CD’s. When There’s Love and ìRaining on the Roses about which famed jazz writer Scott Yanow writes in his book, The Jazz Singers, that Fopeano’s Raining on the Roses CD makes one wonder why she’s not nationally famous. Guitarist, Bill Kopper will accompany Wendy.
