Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: KUVO’s Latino Roots

National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15 since the Reagan-era law was enacted in 1988) celebrates the contributions of Latinos in virtually every sector of American society – business, visual and literary arts, science, health, the environment, education, government and law, the military, family, communications, religion, and of course, music.

For KUVO, the “Latin tinge” is far more than flavoring in our musical stew.  It’s a core ingredient.  Take away the influences of Cuba, and would Dizzy Gillespie’s sound ever have developed?  Without New York’s Puerto Rican roots would the Salsa Boom have sprung forth?  Without Spanish flamenco, how would classical and jazz guitar have developed?  Without Mexican Folklorico, would the popular streams of Mariachi, Norteño have been detoured?  West Coast jazz would certainly be missing “something” without the Brazilian Invasion!  KUVO’s mix relishes in the rich diversity drawn from these waves of rhythm, Intonation, interpretation, and improvisation.

Not only is Latin Jazz (and Jazz Latin) a part of KUVO’s around the clock jazz mix, this 33-year old media outlet has seven weekly programs devoted specifically to diverse musical genres within the Latin milieu.
