Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers have profoundly shaped the ways in which jazz musicians listen to, perform, and arrange for the jazz combo. Alumni from the Jazz Messengers include Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett, Wynton Marsalis, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, and many other icons of the art form. The Zach Rich Sextet would like to pay homage by presenting a set of music featuring transcriptions and arrangements of both popular and obscure selections from various Jazz Messengers albums including Caravan, Free For All, Roots & Herbs, Jazz Messengers, and more.
Zach Rich is a composer, trombonist, and educator from Wichita, Kansas. Currently based in Colorado, he writes for and performs with a variety of ensembles throughout the Front Range and Midwest areas. His work has received awards and recognition from organizations such as the New York Youth Symphony, ASCAP, the International Society of Jazz Arrangers and Composers, the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers, the Jazz Education Network, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Zach’s debut album, Boundless, will be released spring 2020.
