Veronica Swift a Newman Center Presents in partnership with KUVO.
Swift is performing with her band Mathis Picard on piano, Alexander Claffy on bass, Dylan Elise on drums, and Denver local Alex Heffron on guitar.
Daughter of jazz artists: pianist Hod O’Brien and singer Stephanie Nakasian, Veronica Swift’s raw talent has secured her place as one of the most irresistibly gifted jazz vocalists of her generation. Swift won second place at the prestigious Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition in 2015, toured with Wynton Marsalis, and held a Saturday performance slot at the legendary NY Birdland Jazz Club in 2017.
“A master class on space and dynamics…an adept lyrical interpreter…tremendous tonal command.” –JazzTimes
Veronica Swift’s performance will kick off the 2021-22 Newman Center Presents series that includes such performers as Kronos Quartet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and the Nashville Ballet with Rhiannon Giddens.
As Swift remarked recently, “This show at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts is not only a comeback after a year-long hiatus of no gigs, but it is a rebirth. The songs I’ve picked for this show encompass songs from my latest release This Bitter Earth and its message, but also we have included new songs that mix classical with rock and roll and funk as well as jazz. I now know, my purpose as an artist is to break down these genre barriers and fully immerse the audience in what to me is just simply music.”
Her latest recording This Bitter Earth was released in March of 2021, quickly reaching #1 on the JazzWeek album chart. Boasting a clear and lilting tone and radiant stage presence, she is also a master of rigorous vocal techniques like vocalese and scat. In the Wall Street Journal’s words: “[Swift] might be the best scat singer since Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O’Day, Sarah Vaughan, and Mel Tormé.”
