Seicento Baroque Ensemble’s “Embellish!” workshops and performances Feb. 29-March 2 will trace the vital role of improvisation and ornamentation as it developed in the 17th century and persists in today’s jazz music.

Part of the Embellish! Improvisation in Baroque & Jazz collection

Seicento Baroque Ensemble’s “Embellish!” performance will trace the vital role of improvisation and ornamentation as it developed in the 17th century and persists in today’s jazz music. The concert features works by Girolamo Frescobaldi (“Missa sopra l’aria della Monica a 8”), excerpts from Claudio Monteverdi (“Lamento della ninfa” and “Movete al mio bel suon”), Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington’s “Take the A Train”, and some surprises based on the musical leanings of the improvising forces. Performers include the 36-voice Seicento choir, early music and improvisation specialist Dr. Tina Chancey, the Denver-based Mark Diamond jazz trio, and a trio of Seicento apprentice artists advancing their professional singing careers.
