Musical Style: Latin & Brazilian jazz
Mistura Fina is a Latin jazz band formed in Denver in 2000. The band features a rousing mixture of African and Latin rhythms combined with a jazz delivery that compels listeners to get up and move. Founding member Frank Ayala has been a fixture in the city’s music scene and has entertained audiences for over 40 years. He frequently features exotic instruments like the Berimbau, Cuica, and Talking Drum much to the delight of his audiences.
The band has performed at numerous large events such as the Estes Park Jazz Festival, Cherry Creek Art Festival, Longmont Jazz Festival, KUVO’s International Jazz Day, Westcliff Jazz Festival, and the Breckenridge Jazz Festival. The name Mistura Fina translates to a ‘fine mixture’ that includes standards by Latin jazz greats Antonio Carlos Jobim, Tito Puente, and Paquito de Rivera, to name a few.
Mistura Fina produced two releases to critical acclaim. The second release, “A Little Bit of This and a Little Bit of That” was reviewed in the premier jazz publication All About Jazz and was enthusiastically received by listening audiences in Australia, France, and South America. Mistura Fina was featured on KUVO, Denver’s Oasis in the City jazz radio station in their Live Performance Studio, and was a guest artist at KUVO’s 20th Anniversary Celebration. The band also opened for world-renowned recording artists Flora Purim, Airto, and the late, great flute player Herbie Mann. Local performance venues include Dazzle in Denver, The Bar at 38th Place, and Caffé Sole in Boulder, Spangalang Brewery, 5 Points Jazz fest
Mistura Fina delivers due to its diverse appeal. It entertains and educates, but above all, it is unique to anything currently found in Denver.
