An exciting tribute concert celebrates Dazzle’s new art installations honoring Denver’s Latino/Chicano jazz heritage. The late, great tenor saxophonist Freddy Rodriguez was a jazz icon at Denver’s El Chapultepec for more than 40 years. Freddy was a teacher and mentor to hundreds of jazz musicians throughout Denver and hosted some of the country’s jazz greats when they traveled through Denver.
On this special concert, Freddy’s son, Freddy Rodriguez Jr., will be leading one of the long-standing El Chapultepec bands to pay tribute to his late father and band leader featuring Tony Black on drums, Andrew Hudson on bass, and Carlos Chavez on Tenor Sax. This is the first time this band has performed without Freddy, Sr. since he passed away in March 2020. As was Freddy’s style, on the last set, jazz musicians are invited to sit in and also share memories of Freddy and the El Chapultepec
In addition, Dazzle will be honoring the other art installation honorees: KUVO’s Flo Hernandez-Ramo, Carlos Landou, Tina Cartagena, Arturo Gomez and Anna Diaz and Angela Guerrero, founders of the El Chapultepec Legacy Project.
