KEITH OXMAN is a Denver jazz scene icon, tenor master, and bandleader. Most avid jazz fans in Denver and Colorado know of Keith Oxman. Born and raised right in Denver, Oxman is one of the staples of the Denver Jazz scene. Listening to Oxman’s superb technique and expressive improvisations are extremely reminiscent of the songs of Coltrane and Joe Henderson. Oxman’s incredible dedication to the music has blessed him with the opportunity to play with notable artists Sonny Stitt, Art Blakey, Buddy Rich, Jack McDuff, Red Holloway, Pete Christlieb, Joe Bonner, Tom Harrell, Phil Woods, Dave Brubeck, Gerry Bergonzi and many more. Not only is his playing an inspiration to the scene here in Denver, but he is also deeply invested in music education. Oxman has taught at Denver’s East High School since 2000. This program continuously shines as one of the best music programs in Colorado. Oxman undoubtedly has changed many lives through his musical and educational dedication.
HANK MOBLEY is one of the more understated tenor sax voices of the jazz idiom, but no less noteworthy. Called the “mediumweight champion of the tenor saxophone” by jazz journalist Leonard Feather, Mobley’s playing, and composing were always steeped in melodies and easy listening. His soulful tone and melodic approach were unlike his contemporaries with brighter, energetic tones like Rollins or Trane. Nor did play as light and subdued as his predecessor Lester Young, which is why Feather called him the mediumweight champion. As a Blue Note artist, Mobley released one of the most successful and well-known Blue Note Records, Soul Station. Which was filled with classic jazz tunes like This I Dig of You, Soul Station, and Dig Dis – all are still played today. Through his career as band leader and side man, Mobley played with other greats of his day such as Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Sonny Clarke, Grant Green Jimmy Cobb, and more.
