Applied Theory in Jazz Improvisation: Finding Your Own Voice
Saturdays 10:00 am – 11:30 am
This class addresses strategic thinking in improvisation. Students will analyze specific phrases, generalize the theory, and organize their thinking and practice strategically. Students will improvise and then self-transcribe, as well as compose their “ideal improvisation” on a jazz tune and then perform it. Students will analyze solos by their main influences and practice integrating those influences into their own authentic phrasing. Finally, students will then employ their own strategies and technique to tell a story every time they improvise.
