Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea and Art Lande were the first American pianists to record for ECM records in the early 1970s. Art and Chick connected periodically over the years, always amicably and with mutual respect. To choose a set of Corea pieces was not easy, but as always, Flex brings a fresh slant to all of this music.
When Art was a young boy in New York City, he got to hear the great Oscar Peterson Trio up close at “The Embers Club.” What an inspiration! Oscar’s composing is much less known than his playing. He was also a great arranger, making special solo spots for bass and drums. Flex arrangements reflect
Peterson’s insights.
This will be a night honoring two legendary pianist/composers who greatly influenced the writing, playing, and band concepts you will hear at this concert of Art Lande and Flex. Art Lande (piano) Grammy-nominated Art Lande is considered one of the premiere improvisational jazz pianists today. He began piano at age 4, studied at Williams College & moved to San Francisco in 1969. He has mostly carved out his own singular path throughout his career, taking the innovations of Bill Evans several steps further. In 1973 he recorded with Jan Garbarek and Ted Curson and in the mid-1970’s
had started his own jazz school. In 1976 he formed the quartet Rubisa Patrol which recorded for ECM and lasted until 1983. After teaching for three years in Switzerland, Lande in 1987 moved to Boulder, Colorado. He appears in many of the “Who’s Who in Jazz” encyclopedias available today for his role in the development of “Chamber Jazz.”
