Nonagenarian David Amram boasts a remarkable eight-decade career in music. In his early years, Amram made his mark as a jazz French horn player, sharing the stage with legendary artists such as Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis. He later left an indelible legacy in classical music, marked by collaborations with the likes of Leonard Bernstein. Amram’s impressive classical repertoire encompasses over 100 orchestral and chamber music compositions, in addition to numerous scores for theater and film. A selection of his notable film credits include ‘The Manchurian Candidate’ (1962), ‘Splendor in the Grass’ (1961), Arthur Miller’s ‘After The Fall,’ and the iconic Beat Generation film featuring and written by Jack Kerouac ‘Pull My Daisy’ (1959).
Amram also has strong Denver ties. In 2012 he created a live recording with the Colorado Symphony of his composition “This Land: Symphonic Variations on a Song by Woody Guthrie” released in 2014. The album featured Brooke Ellen Ferguson on flute and was conducted by Amram himself. Amram also spent time in Denver with Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady in the 1950’s and between 2009 and 2019 supported the annual Denver celebrations of Cassady’s birthday.
