interview with Katharine Brenton

You have to go back to the term of Colorado’s “education governor” Roy Romer in the mid-1990s to find the roots of the “Bright by Three” campaign.  Updated for the social media age, explains Katharine Brenton, tips for raising smart babies belong in your pocket.

“Parenting information, books, learning games… all sorts of things that are going to help parents play with their kids, talk to their kids, read with them and interact with them,” said Brennton, director of Strategic Initiatives and Campaigns with Bright by Three (formerly Colorado Bright Beginnings), a non-profit organization that gets no government funds.

The new Bright by Text program is built to distribute a three-year series of weekly text messages to one’s cell phone.  Based on the exact age of the child, messages will be timed to coincide with their typical stage of development.

“Brain architecture really relies on responsive, loving relationships with adult caregivers.”

The above interview was conducted by KUVO afternoon host (and proud grandmom) Susan Gatschet-Reese.
