Behind the Mic: Terri Gentry shares more on Dearfield, the focus of the Season 11 Premiere of “Colorado Experience” on RMPBS

The story of the once-thriving Black homesteading settlement of Dearfield, its significance, and recent findings are the subject of a new Rocky Mountain PBS documentary, “Colorado Experience: Uncovering Dearfield.”  Just a couple of buildings are left standing as historians and archaeologists are still learning about life in Dearfield. “This was an opportunity for families to set their own course, to create their own lives, to own land, to plant their crops … to build your home, and to create a small business and figure out ways to make a career path for yourself; make your life better,” said Terri Gentry, a historian, and descendant of Dearfield homesteaders.

Terri Gentry of the Black American West Museum & Heritage Center joined The Morning Set “Behind the Mic”  to share more about her personal connection to this historic settlement and to give us a look into its ongoing preservation efforts. The below conversation aired on KUVO’s The Morning Set in anticipation of the season 11 premiere of “Colorado Experience”
