A Record Story—”Afro-Cuban” by Kenny Dorham
Kenny Dorham “Afro-Cuban” Blue Note Records (1955)
Besides being one of my all-time top ten Latin jazz albums, I love the artwork and LP title that when released in 1955 raised a few eyebrows.
I also am one of only 500 people in the world with the tee-shirt of this LP cover because it was pulled from the market after the designer of the artwork stopped Blue Note from further printing of the tee shirts as he never gave them permission to use it.
Finally, this is the U.S. recording debut of the legendary Cuban conguero, Carlos “Patato” Valdés.
