Curated by bassist Seth Lewis, this series features a collection of Denver’s finest performing the deeply grooving works of New Orleans’ most famous funk band, The Meters. This project is explores and focuses on material from the early releases of the Meters. These deep instrumental funk grooves are reinterpreted faithfully by the band, but provide ample room for the ensemble to stretch out musically.
The lineup: Dave Devine – guitar, Tom Amend – Organ, Seth Lewis – bass, BK Khan – drums (8/6 & 8/20) and Kevin Matthews (drums 8/13 & 8/27).
The Meters were and will always be the quintessential New Orleans funk band. Lead by keyboardist Art Neville, The Meters sound was down-home and earthy. Most of their recordings were instrumentals, putting the emphasis on organic grooves and complex rhythms. The syncopated, layered percussion intertwined with the gritty grooves of the guitar and organ, created a distinctive and unmistakable sound that has been coveted by musicians and fans for nearly 50 years.
