Vinyl Vault — Boogaloo Joe Jones, “No Way!”

The Vinyl Vault features a 1971 album from guitarist Boogaloo Joe Jones entitled “No Way!” Jones lives up to his nickname on this Prestige release with a program of generally upbeat tunes that will have you working on your best boogaloo right there in your living room. Or maybe in your car.

Jones was joined on the date by a stellar backup band including tenor sax man Grover Washington, Jr. who was only about a year away from recording his first album, “Inner City Blues,” which launched him on a notable career. The drummer was Bernard Purdie, a go-to session drummer on soul and R&B records for decades. Rounding out the band was Sonny Phillips and Butch Cornell on organs and Jimmy Lewis on the bass.

“No Way!” was recorded during the heyday of soul jazz, a sub-genre that appeared in the late 1960s partially in response to hard bop’s declining popularity and the rise of rock and Motown. Artists like Jimmy Smith, Lou Donaldson, and Stanley Turrentine were among the more well-known purveyors of the music. Boogaloo Joe Jones, although not quite as well known, made his mark as well, recording nine albums as a leader from the late 60s through 1976, mostly for Prestige. “No Way!” was right in the middle, as his fifth album.
