Ars Nova Singers, Boulder’s nationally acclaimed a cappella ensemble, will host a virtual performance of Made Cool, with British composer Will Todd’s “Mass in Blue” in mid-February. Artistic Director Tom Morgan pairs a recent Ars Nova recording of the work with his signature video editing for an unforgettable virtual experience for the senses. Featuring guest artists Kathryn Radakovich, soprano; Scott Martin, piano; Mark Diamond, bass; and Russ Meissner, drums; this sacred opus is a brilliantly inventive aural tapestry that weaves imaginative melodies with 12-bar blues and upbeat grooves in a hybrid style that has been described as “religious doctrine meets funk!”
Written in 2003 the work includes six movements: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei. This swinging approach to a traditional Latin mass conjures the big band dance halls and smoky downtown nightclubs of quintessential American jazz. From a driving, brassy Credo befitting Count Basie’s Orchestra to the Thelonius Monk-tinged grooves of the Sanctus, the sumptuous virtuosity of “Mass in Blue” has made it quickly become an Ars Nova fan favorite. The virtual event will take place on YouTube on Friday, February 18, at 7:30 pm MST. Ars Nova is offering the performance free of charge as a gift to the community as we all continue to grapple with the effects of the pandemic and natural disasters. This virtual recorded performance is being offered free of charge. Register here to reserve your spot!
