The Jazz River — My Favorite Things
Hearing John Coltrane take off like a rocket
Or Cannonball Adderley deep in the pocket
Hot NOLA funk that the Meters can bring
These are a few of my favorite things.
Tango, Flamenco, or African High Life
Otis Rush guitar that cuts like a knife
Django and Stephane’s unbeatable swing
These are a few of my favorite things.
When the night falls
When my life stalls
Or the day turns gray
I listen again to my favorite things
And gratefully go on my way.
Charles Lloyd blowing from deep in his soul
Jarrett, Corea, and old Jelly Roll
Being entranced when Betty Carter sings
These are a few of my favorite things.
Abdullah Ibrahim South Africa’s treasure
Or Charlie Haden by any kind of measure
The great Maria Schneider and what her band brings
These are a few of my favorite things.
When my words fail
No check’s in the mail
And the world takes its toll
I listen again to my favorite things
And soon I am back feeling whole.
Tune in to the Jazz River on Sunday, January 9, at 5 pm when host Matthew Goldwasser shares some of his “favorite things.”
