New Music Monday—Renee Rosnes, Samara Joy, & Luke Carlos O’Reilly

The New Music Monday highlights for August 30, will include the following and more!

Renee Rosnes  – “Kinds of Love”
Renee is one of the most accomplished pianists/composers of the last 30 + years. originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, she grew up in North Vancouver, British Columbia and has been living in NYC since the early 1990s. After stints as the pianist for J.J. Johnson, Wayne Shorter and James Moody, Rosnes founded her own group and began recording as a leader. Never one to forget her Canadian roots, Renee is the artistic director of the Oscar Peterson International Jazz Festival and the host of the CBC “Jazz Profiles” program featuring Canadian jazz musicians. She founded the highly acclaimed Artemis group in 2018-an all-female ensemble. Her latest album features 9 original compositions and arrangements accompanied by 4 other stand out musicians.

Samara Joy  – “Samara Joy”
Bronx native daughter Samara Joy is a 21 year old phenom, winner of the 2019 Sarah Vaughan Vocal Competition.. Confident in her ability to project her gifted voice without fanfare, Samara chose to be accompanied by a guitar led trio and selected a great array of songs from the past which she injects her personal touch in this, her most impressive debut. Although heavily influenced by her shero Sarah, you can also hear the influence of contemporary singers Samara grew up listening to.

Luke Carlos O’Reilly  – “3 Suites”
Pianist-composer-educator Luke grew up in Boston, after graduating high school, Luke relocated to to Philadelphia to attend Temple University and still lives there. As indicated by the title, O’Reilly’s newest is divided in 3 sections, the first part are originals by Luke and his bassist and drummer-also from Philly, the second portion the trio accompanies vocalist Alexa Barchina and the final songs are dedicated to 3 recently departed pianists who mentored and helped shape Luke’s own musicianship, they are Mulgrew Miller, George Duke and Cedar Walton.

Every Monday starting at Noon, I debut the latest arrivals to the KUVO Jazz library, many of them are played ahead of their official release date. In addition to the music, I’ll provide a few tidbits about the artist in particular if it’s a new or up and coming artist.
