Vinyl Vault—”The Lady from Brazil”

The sounds of Brazil are on tap this week on the Vinyl Vault when we hear some tracks from Tania Maria’s 1986 album “The Lady From Brazil,” a release on the Manhattan Records label. Maria sang and played acoustic and electric piano, synthesizers and percussion and had a hand in composing all the songs on the album. “The Lady From Brazil” was her twelfth album out of the 25 or so she has released to date.

The album continued her unique fusion of funk, jazz, Afro-Cuban sounds and Brazilian pop. The heady mixture is topped off with her distinctive and soulful vocals. George Duke produced the album, arranged many of the compositions and played keyboards throughout. Other contributing musicians included Anthony Jackson, Freddy Washington and Eddie Gomez on bass, Steve Gadd on drums, Paulino da Costa on percussion, George Howard on saxophone and Marcy Levy on background vocals.
