On Friday February 7th at 8:00pm, upstairs at the Mercury Café, the David Amram Quartet featuring Brad Good on trumpet, Tony Black on drums and Artie Moore…will perform a full set of Jazz as headliners of the 11th annual Neal Cassady Birthday Bash. The Bash will also celebrate the memory of Denver’s Cassady with poets and speakers, including Neal’s son John Allen Cassady.
In addition, a scale model maquette of a life size sculpture of Neal and Jack Kerouac, by noted bronze artist Sutton Betti, will be on display. This monument is proposed for placement at Sonny Lawson Field at 23rd and California. The location figures prominently in Kerouac’s best-selling book “On the Road.”
Also, John Hayden will lead a walking tour of Neal’s Denver haunts starting at the Mercury Café at 3pm on Friday February 7th prior to the Bash. For additional information on the tour and to secure a place, please email haydenpryor@msn.com.
And, coinciding with the 11th Annual Bash, the Denver Public Library will host an exhibit at the Central Branch located at 10 W. 14th Ave. Pky. entitled, “Neal Cassady’s Denver.” The exhibit featuring first editions and other memorabilia relating to Cassady’s Denver years will run from January 10th to March 31st.
