“Waltz for Debby” | Stories of Standards
This week’s selection on Stories of Standards is the Bill Evans tune, “Waltz for Debby.”
After his discharge from the military, Evans spent much time in the company of his young niece, so much so that he was inspired to write this piano trio jazz waltz in her honor.
The song has been much recorded, both as an instrumental and as a vocal. Lyrics were written by Gene Lees, a multi-talented wordsmith, who also penned the lyrics to Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Corcovado” (released as “Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars”).
