Coolest summer school ever: CCJA’s Latin Jazz workshop
This summer on Wednesday nights at KUVO’s Phyllis A. Greer Performance Studio, the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts has been instructing students ages 7 through 18 in the fine points of Latin Jazz. Instructor Eric Trujillo visited “First Take with Lando and Chavis” to describe what it takes to teach Latin Jazz to young musicians.
“We always start the class with a Latin percussion workshop,” explained Trujillo (who plays reeds primarily). ”It’s required for the horn players, and the bass and piano players in Latin music are considered percussionists, too.”
In this interview, Trujillo also explains “the clave” rhythm that in central to Latin Jazz, and he demonstrates a few rhythms as well.
This summer’s Latin Jazz Ensemble plays a recital as the opening act for the Summer Jazz Series on Saturday, July 12, 2o14, 7:00 p.m. at Crossroads Theater, 2590 Washington St., Denver, 80205 (right at Five Points).
Music on this feature includes a live recording of the young Latin Jazz Ensemble, and the CCJA’s The Dominant 7 & The Jazz Arts Messengers, “South Corea,” from the 2010 CD Fourteen Channels.
