Music Galore | Norman Provizer’s Jazz Notes

    

Four of this week’s seven nights offer some potent sounds from the trios led by pianist Aaron Goldberg and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel. Goldberg, who went to Harvard, is a very strong player who knocked everyone out when he visited Dazzle in March as part of Anat Cohen’s band. His latest CD The Now has him with bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland. At Dazzle, 930 Lincoln, he is bringing a potent trio that, according to the pianist’s website, has Omer Avital on bass and Obed Calvaire on drums at 7 and 9 .m. on Friday and Saturday (303-839-5100).

Then, on Tuesday and Wednesday at 7 and 9 p.m., it’s guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel who beings a potent trio to Dazzle. Rosenwinkel, originally from Philadelphia, is among the very finest guitarists of his generation and a player who has had a great deal of influence on others. And there aren’t a lot of jazz players who have had Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest co-produce one of their discs, while also working on discs from Q-Tip. Rosenwinkel has worked with Paul Motian, Joe Henderson and, of course, drummer Brian Blade as part of the drummer’s imposing Fellowship Band.

At Dazzle Rosenwinkel has bassist Eric Revis and drummer Nasheet Waits – another mighty combo. On top of this, Goldberg also performs with Rosenwinkel a fact that kind of closes the week’s musical circle. I was much impressed by both Goldberg and Rosenwinkel when I caught both of then during their last visits to Dazzle. That should also be true this time around, especially given the super sidemen on hand.

When Goldberg is at Dazzle on Friday for the first of his two-night stay, bluesman Otis Taylor, whose new CD is called Hey Joe Opus Red Meat, is at Herman’s Hideaway, 1578 S. Broadway, along with four other bands from these parts (303-777-5840). The idea that one of the leading blues players on the scene lives here is a trip. What’s even better is that Taylor has strong jazz sensibilities.

Returning to Dazzle, Thursday finds singer Kenya (a.k.a. Kenya McGuire Johnson) who is from Denver on stage at 7 and 9 p.m. While here, the singer studied voice with Ms. Bennie Williams (as did Dianne Reeves, a Denver resident and a top, top shelf jazz vocalist). Kenya has found success in the UK as well as home On Sunday, singer Donna Devine hooks up with trombonist John Hines at Dazzle at 7 p.m., while, on Monday, singer Erica Papillion-Posey is at Dazzle at 7 p.m. with a group that features two New Orleans musicians (pianist Chester Daigle III and violinist Jarius Daigle). 

Also on the vocal front, the “Jazz for Jazz Lovers” home series has singer Carolyn Martinez in from LA. The home concert is at 4 p.m. on Sunday (frankcn@earthlink.net for reservations). On Saturday, Martinez is also at La Cour, 1643 S. Broadway at 7 p.m. (303-777-50000).

On the New Orleans front, Hammond B-3 man Joe Krown brings a Crescent City trio to Nocturne, 1330 27th St., tonight and Friday at 7 p.m. (303-395-3333). Walter Wolfman Washington and Russell Batiste Jr. are his fellow travelers from the Big Easy. And on Saturday drummer Tom Tilton’s Joe Bonner Legacy Band is at Madame C.J. Walker Park, 30th and High St., at 2 p.m.
