KUVO Studio Club: The Ben Parrish Quintet | Nov 29

The Ben Parrish Quintet will join us in the Phyllis A. Greer Performance Studio on Thursday, November 29 from 3 to 4 pm in celebration of the newly released CD, “Quiet Stream,” the new compositions feature: Ben Parrish – Guitar, Taylor Clay – Tenor Sax, Daryl Gott – Alto Sax, Hunter Roberts – Bass, Kevin Matthews – Drums, with Camilla Vaitaitis – Voice/Keys. Studio Club members are in for a real treat!

Ben plays in several different groups including The Ben Parrish Quintet, Dart Echo, indie band Amazing Adventures and the Lamont Jazz Orchestra. In addition to actively performing, Ben maintains a large private teaching studio with for students of all ages.

Ben Parrish is a guitarist, composer, arranger, and educator currently based in Denver, CO. A Seattle native, he moved to Greeley in 2012 where he attended the University of Northern Colorado. He graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor’s degree in jazz guitar and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in jazz guitar at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music.

Ben on the songs: The songs on Quiet Stream are about people, feelings, and passion in my life. “Bassaloping” is a musical representation of yo-yo-ing, one of my favorite hobbies. The fast paces nature of the yo-yo and the infinite possibilities for new tricks reflects both the nature of this piece and jazz as an art form. Homielodics is a play on Ornette Coleman’s theory of Homielodics and is an ode to all the wonderful musicians that I’m delighted to call my friends. They inspire and surprise me all the time and they played their butts off on this recording! The Anti-Smell from Way Back When attempts to explain an unexplainable phenomenon regarding a nostalgic smell dating back from early childhood. Throughout the album, the theme of nature returns. This is depicted on the front cover drawn by Hunter Roberts. In this scene, a person sits in a state of peace as they partake in another one of my favorites hobbies, fishing. In the title track, vocalist/pianist Camilla Vaitaitis sings of the ongoing struggle between nature and humans. I hope you enjoy this album as much as I enjoyed writing and recording it with these amazing musicians!”
