Join host Michael Wulfsohn tonight, March 26 at 8 pm for “Wulfie’s Wax Museum,” on the Monday Night Beat, as we celebrate National Women’s History month, and take a listen to flutist Bobbi Humphrey’s, “Blacks and Blues.” This immensely popular album was released in 1974 and was Bobbi’s 3rd album as a leader after becoming the first female instrumentalist signed to Blue Note Records in 1971.

Influenced by Herbie Mann, and a student of master flutist, Hubert Laws, Bobbi shows off not only her amazingly lush, fluid and beautiful tone on the flute but also her vocal talents, with overdubbed singing on several tunes, following the example of trumpeter, Donald Byrd, “Well, Donald, if you can do it, so can I.” This LP features great studio musicians, including Harvey Mason, Chuck Rainey, and many others.  After being discovered by Dizzy Gillespie at an SMU talent contest, Bobbi went on to perform at The Apollo, Montreux Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, and the Hollywood Bowl.  In addition to her work as a social activist, she has performed with and recorded with George Benson, Duke Ellington, Lee Morgan, Stevie Wonder, and many others, as well as composing jingles for major companies.

This is one of Bobbi’s best and most successful albums. Don’t miss this special wax! Tune in Monday at 8 pm for “Wulfie’s Wax Museum” on the next Monday Night Beat, on KUVO.
