Tune in Monday night, April 1 at 8 pm for “Wulfie’s Wax Museum,” on the Monday Night Beat, as we celebrate the life and birthday of progressive jazz guitarist, Larry Coryell. We’ll spin his 2nd album with his group The Eleventh House, and coincidentally, his 11th album as a leader, “Level One.” This LP was released in 1975 on the Arista label and reached #23 on the Billboard Jazz Charts.

Larry was known as “The Godfather of Fusion,” due to his pioneering Jazz-Rock Fusion guitar style during the 70’s “Jazz Fusion” era, and was a leader on over 60 albums. He was highly influenced by master jazz guitarists Les Paul, Johnny Smith, Barney Kessel, Tal Farlow, and especially, Kenny Burrell and Wes Montgomery, stating that hearing Wes Montgomery, forever “changed his life.” Larry’s Eleventh House band also included Mike Mandel on keyboards and Alphonse Mouzon on drums. On this session, John Lee played bass, and guest artist Michael Lawrence provided the trumpet and flugelhorn work.

This was Larry Coryell’s most popular album during his Jazz-Fusion years. Don’t miss this hot wax!  Tune in Monday, April 1 at 8 pm for “Wulfie’s Wax Museum” with host Michael Wulfsohn on the Monday Night Beat, on KUVO Jazz.
