Studio Club: Denver School of the Arts Jazz Workshop Orchestra | Apr 15
The Denver School of the Arts Jazz Workshop Orchestra is performing for Studio Club on Monday, April 15 at 7 to 8 pm. Denver School of the Arts is a public magnet program of the Denver Public Schools serving 6th through 12th graders. The school is comprised of 11 art majors. Making their fourth appearance at the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival, in May of 2019, the Jazz Workshop Orchestra is one of the premier ensembles at the Denver School of the Arts.
In 2017 the band played at the Essentially Ellington Festival and won 2nd place out of 15 bands. The band was also was featured that year at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, IL and was named “Best Large Ensemble” – Performing Arts Category in last year’s Student Musicians Awards – Down Beat Magazine. The band has made other appearances nationally at the Swing Central Jazz Festival in Savannah, GA, in Los Angeles, San Diego CA and in Chicago, IL.
This year, the jazz combo from the group received the top award in the Students Awards issue of Downbeat Magazine and last year competed in the Charles Mingus High School Competition and Festival in New York. Graduates from this ensemble include New York guitarist Jeremy Most (Ed Sheeran, Emily King) drummer Colin Stranahan (Fred Hersch, Kurt Rosenwinkel) and New Orleans trombonists Greg Hicks and Carly Meyers.
