Spiraling Inward is a new project of original modern jazz compositions that delve deep into emotional and conceptual territory, ranging far from the standard jazz songbook, but pointed straight at the heart of expressive musical dialogue.

As a trio, Stoltzman’s East Coast roots, Heller’s West Coast roots, and Teppa’s South American roots meld together in a distinctly creative jazz tapestry. They are joined by one of the worlds premier saxophonists, John Ellis, who adds his soulful virtuosity and New Orleans-rooted voice to bring this music to life.

The songs vary from extended compositions to brief motivic statements with broad improvisational freedom, but the overall theme is clear—this music is intended to reflect the journey that is both deeply personal and inextricably interpersonal, as we confront our commonalities and differences, our raw feelings and potentials, “spiraling inward.”

Peter Stoltzman – piano, John Ellis – tenor saxophone, Dru Heller – drums, Gonzalo Teppa – bass
