Vinyl Vault — David Bromberg, “Wanted Dead or Alive”

This week, the Vinyl Vault goes back 50 years for an album by guitarist, vocalist, and composer David Bromberg. In 1974, Columbia Records released his album, “Wanted Dead or Alive.” The album title refers to the personnel and the recording context. Side one is a studio recording featuring members of the Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Keith Godchaux, and Bill Kreutzmann. The second side was recorded live.

Bromberg, now 79, has been known for mixing multiple musical genres and this album is a great example. Much of the music is rooted in the blues, but his other influences include jazz, rock, country, bluegrass, and folk. Although Bromberg sticks to acoustic and electric guitars on this album, he also plays fiddle, dobro, mandolin, and pedal steel guitar.

Bromberg is also known for his clever and humorous lyrics and we’ll hear a couple of those Tuesday evening including “Someone Else’s Blues” and “Send Me to the ‘Lectric Chair.” We’ll also hear a horn-driven version of the classic “Kansas City.”
