Raised in Colorado, Mike started playing guitar when he was 18. After a few years as an unenthusiastic advertising major, he decided to pursue music seriously and graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a performance degree in Classical Guitar.

While at CU Mike was fortunate to study with legendary educator and guitarist Dale Bruning. A transformational experience, Mr. Bruning became a role model not just as a guitarist and educator, but as a human being.

Since that time Hyland has been playing professionally on guitar and upright bass in a variety of settings from classical to rock to jazz.
