Did you ever wonder what your favorite musicians are listening to, or the recordings that influenced them? “Take Five” is a look at the music that inspires and excites them. It’s difficult to choose ONLY five recordings!

Warren Wolf’s latest recording is “History of the Vibraphone”, and he celebrates and honors icons Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson, Cal Tjader, Lionel Hampton, Gary Burton, Roy Ayres, Joe Locke and Dave Samuels, his former teacher at Berklee College of Music.

The Baltimore native began studying music at three as his father’s protegee and was classically trained on vibe, marimba, drums, and piano. He attended Baltimore School for the Arts and graduated from Berklee College of Music. He performs and records with Christian McBride, the SFJAZZ Collective, and also records with Bobby Watson’s Live and Learn Sextet and Karriem Riggins Virtuoso Experience.

Miles Smiles by the Miles Davis Quintet (Columbia)
“Desert Island pick. The connection between Ron Carter and Tony Williams is super tight here. The entire band plays effortlessly on the record. Herbie Hancock takes a beautiful solo on ‘Circle’.”

 Little Ghost by Moonchild
“I’ve always been a fan of R&B music with hints of jazz harmony. The entire record is really flowing, and the harmonies feel great. Really good album to practice with.”

Gumbo Unplugged by PJ Morton
Live studio recording from a great artist that gives hints at jazz, gospel, and R&B. His rendition of “How Deep Is Your Love” by the Bee Gees, featuring Yebba is great.

For The First Time by Antonio Hart (Novus)
“Definitely an inspirational album for me because Antonio was a huge part of my musical upbringing. All of the musicians on the record are mentors for me.”

Tierra y Libertad by Plena 79 featuring Alain Perez & Jeremy Bosch and the Salsa Orchestra
“Pan American/Latin Jazz is great on this recording. The harmonies, groove and choice of songs make this an absolute favorite of mine.”
