KUVO and Newman Center present Joshua Redman Group featuring Gabrielle Cavassa “where are we” Tour on Friday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m.

One of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists of his generation, Joshua Redman has released over twenty albums and is a previous winner of the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition. His latest release, “where are we” (Blue Note), features typically brilliant supporting partners and (in a first for Redman) built around a dynamic vocalist. The Joshua Redman Group featuring Gabrielle Cavassa will make their Denver debut at the Newman Center on March 1 featuring Paul Cornish on piano, Philip Norris on bass and Nazir Ebo on drums.

“Doing a record with a vocalist was something I thought I’d probably get to eventually,” Redman explains, laughing. “I guess I decided I was ‘ready.'” He found the perfect partner in young vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa. “Once I heard Gabrielle, I realized that she has an expressive quality and an intimacy and a vulnerability in her sound that is singularly captivating.”

Born in Berkeley, California Redman is the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff. In 1991 Redman graduated from Harvard College summa cum laude and had already been accepted by Yale Law School, but deferred entrance for what he believed was only going to be one year. Instead, he moved to New York City and immediately found himself immersed in the city’s burgeoning jazz scene. Since then, Redman has worked and played with a vast array of jazz luminaries and has garnered top honors in critics and readers polls of DownBeat, Jazz Times, The Village Voice and Rolling Stone.

The Joshua Redman Group featuring Gabrielle Cavassa appears in part through the generosity of the Christina and John Hatherly Visiting Artist Fund. Presented by KUVO Jazz.

In anticipation for this performance, The Morning Set’s Abi Clark caught up with Joshua Redman on his latest 2023 release “where are we”, this upcoming performance at The Newman Center, and recollections of previous stops playing music in Denver.
