28th Annual Chicano Music Festival & Auction

The 28th annual Chicano Music Festival and Auction is July 24 through 28, including the Chicano Music Hall of Fame induction concert on Thursday, July 25.

Among this year’s inductees are Richard Olguin Sr., a drummer and vocalist who happens to be the father of KUVO’s own Latin Soul Party host Ricky O’! Mr. Olguin and Ricky O’ visited the Morning Set, where he told a few working musician stories, including his drum battle with James Brown at the Rossonian Hotel in Denver’s Five Points neighborhood.

The theme of this year’s induction is “Legends Walk Among Us.” Other inductees are Julia Pacheco y la Familia Pacheco (Pueblo), Tomás Córdova, KUVO R&B Jukebox founder and co-host Rolando Garcia, and Rudy Medina.

Other events at the Chicano Music Festival and Auction are The XicanIndie free film screening on Wednesday, July 24, the Roots Resistance Jam Session on Friday, July 26, the Summer Pachanga on Saturday, July 27, and the Mariachi Tardeada on Sunday, July 28. Wednesday, July 24 — XicanIndie Chicano Music in Film at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, July 25 — Chicano Music Hall of Fame at 6:30 p.m. — Legends Walk Amongst Us!
The greats of Chicano music in Colorado are honored and respected for their commitment to keeping the culture alive.

Friday, July 26 — Roots Resistance Jam at 6:30 p.m.
Bring your axe, your voice, and your passion, and hang out with some of the coolest musicians and singers around. Throw down and join in, fun for all. No audition is necessary.

Saturday, July 27 — Summer Pachanga and Auction at 6 p.m.
The hottest party of the summer! Bring your dancing chanclas and your wallet and be prepared to show your moves. Four hours of Puro Party!

Sunday, July 28 — Mariachi Tardeada from 1 – 5 p.m.
A full afternoon of Mariachi Music! Wall-to-wall mariachi in the cool of the Martinez Theater. Family, Friends, and Fun. From heartbreaking boleros to grito-inducing rancheras, it’s all here.
