Weekday mornings from 6 to 9am, Carlos Lando and Steve Chavis bring you Community, Culture and Music on First Take with Lando and Chavis. A blend of music, news and community-oriented programming, tuning in to First Take is the right way to start your day. Lando's "Stories of Standards" feature examines a jazz standard or a tune from the Great American Songbook each week. Stories of composers, lyricists, performers, and songs. On Wednesdays, Steve hosts Eats and Beats, a segment related to food, restaurants, chefs and all things gastronomic. Tune in!

Councilman Brooks Update: Legal Pot, 5 Points

Denver District 8 councilman Albus Brooks dropped by First Take to provide an update on his latest vote upholding the right to smoke legal marijuana on one's own property, the coming construction boom in the Five Points neighborhood, and the Saturday night (Dec. 7) tree-lighting at 27th and Welton. At the City Council meeting on Monday, December 2, 2013, Councilman Brooks changed his earlier position to now allow the smoking of legal marijuana anywhere on one's own property. Osage Cafe: Where Food Meets Community Vision

Nearly 100 students have graduated from the Denver Housing Authority's Youth Culinary Academy. A few of them get to sharpen their skills at the school's working restaurant, Osage Cafe (1099 Osage), in the Mariposa District. "Culinary Arts with a Mission," says the website. It claims to be Denver's "first community-based culinary training center." Osage Cafe also offers community classes on healthy, affordable cooking.

Tom Wopat sings jazz!

Most people know actor Tom Wopat as "Luke Duke" in the 80s TV show "The Dukes of Hazzard." But he spends most of his time on Broadway, with Tony nominations and musical roles in "Annie Get Your Gun," "Chicago," "42nd Street," "Glengarry Glen Ross," "A Catered Affair," and more. Wopat is in Denver to perform Saturday night (Nov. 23, 2013) with the Musica Sacra Chamber Orchestra at Augustana Lutheran Church, 5000 East Alameda Ave.

Thanksgiving: State of the Pantry

The weekend before Thanksgiving is a big one for the non-profits that feed hungry people. Typically, this is when many of the food pantries put together and distribute baskets for families in need. 

Alexxa Gagner with the Denver Rescue Mission said their annual turkey drive also provides birds to other charities. Frozen turkeys 12 pounds and larger are being accepted at the main location at Park Ave. and Lawrence in downtown Denver.
