Weekday mornings from 6 to 9am, Carlos Lando and Steve Chavis bring you Community, Culture and Music on First Take with Lando and Chavis. A blend of music, news and community-oriented programming, tuning in to First Take is the right way to start your day. Lando's "Stories of Standards" feature examines a jazz standard or a tune from the Great American Songbook each week. Stories of composers, lyricists, performers, and songs. On Wednesdays, Steve hosts Eats and Beats, a segment related to food, restaurants, chefs and all things gastronomic. Tune in!

Denver Celebrates Kwanzaa!

December 26 marks the first day of Kwanzaa, which began in the mid 1960s. The seven day holiday has been celebrated for decades in Denver. Local organizer Thedora Jackson visited First Take's Mary MacCarthy with the details. 

Highlighting a different principle each day until New Years, The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa (the "Nguzo Saba") are: Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity and Faith.

Lindita's capirotada (bread pudding)

  On our ongoing tour of ethnic holiday tables, we ran into Aurora Channel 8's TV chef Lindita Torres-Winters. She shared a holiday story, and her recipe for capirotadas (bread pudding). 

Chef Lindita is also known for her tamales (that come with a surprise inside!), and her salsa, which also comes in a dry mix. Her website:

 Lindita's recipe for Capirotadas (Mexican bread pudding) Into a few cups of water, add sticks of cinnamon and sugar and bring it to a boil until the water turns red.

Ward Lucas Investigates HOAs

Since retiring from Denver's 9News a few years ago, investigative reporter Ward Lucas has been hot on the trail of homeowners associations (HOAs). His 2013 book Neighbors at War is filled with true stories of an all-out physical and financial battles over community covenants, home equity nest eggs, and constitutional rights.

Pianist Lynne Arriale on "Efficient Practice"

For Colorado Gives Day, KUVO celebrates music education and young musicians. To that end, we sought out a real jazz professor, acclaimed pianist Lynne Arriale. In an April 2011 column in Jazz Ed Magazine titled "Efficient practice," she calls a good practice "the highest priority" and "the foundation for musical growth and creativity." But she finds she has to unteach some bad habits before she can train her students in the good habits.
