Jazz Appreciation Month - Spotlight Venues & Live Jazz

Apr 9, 2018

Everybody knows the Blue Note in New York.  But the name goes way back.  There were a number of Blue Note clubs around the U.S.  There was even a Blue Note in Boulder for a few years.  Today, there are Blue Note clubs in Rio, Milan, Hawaii, Napa, Beijing, Tokyo and Nagoya.

We’ve gathered up recordings of some of the great live sessions captured at clubs called “The Blue Note,” and we’ll share them with you throughout the day!  It’s a swinging celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month!

This week’s Vinyl Vault will feature the soundtrack to the 1986 film “Round Midnight.” The movie starred Dexter Gordon in a performance that earned him an Oscar nomination for best actor. The soundtrack itself won an Oscar for Best Original Score. Herbie Hancock was the prime mover behind the soundtrack. Besides production credits, Hancock plays on the album as do Dexter Gordon, Freddy Hubbard, Ron Carter, Billy Higgins, Bobby Hutcherson, John McLaughlin, Wayne Shorter, Bobby McFerrin and many more.
