"the tastiest thing to emerge from Philadelphia since the cheese steak sandwich"

Bassist Christian McBride, who is at Dazzle with his trio on Friday and Saturday, just might be the tastiest thing to emerge from Philadelphia since the cheese steak sandwich. Before he even traveled to New York and Julliard in 1989, the young bass master had lots of exposure to the music in his native Philadelphia. Over the years, McBride worked with a host of players starting with Bobby Watson and continuing with Benny Golson, Freddie Hubbard, Roy Hargrove and Benny Green, as well as recording for Verve starting in the mid-1990s.

Jazz along the Front Range

Matt Wilson, at Dazzle this Saturday and Sunday

On Thursday, this week in live music gets going with a big band when alto saxophonist Bobby Watson brings Horizon to Mount Vernon Country Club just west of Denver. Watson is always on my list of favorite alto saxophonists, combining bop fluency with a burning fire.

Neal Cassady's Birthday Bash (and more!)

Neal Cassady and Jack Kerouac

Guitarist Peter Bernstein kicks off the week in music on Thursday when he hits town to hook up with the Convergence sextet at Dazzle, 930 Lincoln, at 7 and 9 p.m. Born in New York, Bernstein found a potent mentor in the great Jim Hall. Before long, alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson added Bernstein to his group; and, over the years, the fluent guitarist, who was born in 1967, worked with a host of strong players, while producing a string of discs under his own name.

While February remains short on days, that month this year is very long when it comes to music. On February 7 you can get on the road with David Amram at the Neal birthday bash at the Mercury Café. Then on February 8, it’s crossover saxophonist Gerald Albright at the Soiled Dove Underground.
