Joined by a trio of Colorado musicians, Michigan-based saxophonist Mike Bjella brings his warm and buoyant compositions to Nocturne for a winter Artist in Residency. Drawing inspiration from Alice Coltrane, Stevie Wonder and Hermeto Pascoal, the pallet is wide, creative and all every player is a well-versed and brave explorer of time, rhythm, and harmony.

Woodwind player and composer Mike Bjella works as  leader and sideman, performing internationally and recording often for the ensembles Nomad, Chronicle Infinitas and the Mike Bjella Quartet. Recent appearances include the Montreal Jazz Fest, Nancy Jazz Pulsations(France), Vancouver Jazz Fest, Oregon Shakespeare festival, Osheaga Music Festival. and the Five Points Jazz Festival.  Mike currently tours with Nomad, the Simon Millerd Quintet, Pablo Held, Jessica Fichot, the Tom Gershwin Sextet and has been fortunate to perform with Jimmy Heath, John Pattitucci, Delfayo Marsalis, Leif Vollebekk and Peter Peter. In between musical engagements, Mike call Marquette, Michigan home.
