Community Forum to Focus on Disparities in Higher Education

The Colorado Black Round Table will host Saturday a community forum on higher education issues facing African Americans as part of its Losing Ground education project.

About a dozen higher education officials will talk about their concerns about and opportunities within the college systems in Colorado. The panel includes the new black president of Community College of Denver, Everette Freeman, and long-time college basketball coach Lonnie Porter.

National and Colorado Traffic Fatalities Edge Up in 2012

The nation's traffic fatalities increased in 2012, the first yearly increase since 2005, according to final data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The same was true for Colorado, which reported 472 traffic deaths in 2012, compared to 447 for 2011. However, Colorado's record of decline extends only to 2008, when 548 people were killed on the state's highways.

Street Where Fifth Grader Was Killed has History of Hit-and-Run

Michael Espinoza was killed while crossing Federal Boulevard near Colfax Avenue in Denver on Sunday night, Feb. 16, 2014 by a car that did not stop after striking the 11-year-old boy. Police arrested Oswald Lopez later Sunday and have charged him for the accident.

On Sunday, 11-year-old Michael “Mickey” Espinoza was hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver while crossing the street at Federal Boulevard and West Colfax Avenue.
