On Thursday, the string of strong groups appearing in town continues with pianist Emmet Cohen and his trio on stage at Dazzle, 1512 Curtis, at 6 and 8:30 p.m. (303-839-5100).  The last time I saw Cohen was when he was here with bassist Christian McBride’s Trip Trio. This time he has his own group with Russell Hall on bass and Kyle Poole on drums. Hall holds down the bass chair on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, while Poole is a regular on the New York scene and has worked with Wynton Marsalis.

In any musical group, there is an important concept known as ensemble. Ensemble is an umbrella term for everything that goes into the group playing together. Not only must the individual notes begin and end with precision, they must be interpreted as a group. Any infraction, no matter how slight, lessens the effort of the group. There are plenty of examples of superior ensemble playing: the Count Basie band, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, the Robert Shaw Chorale, etc. However, many groups perfect their ensemble technique by playing together on a regular basis.

In recent years, Ron Miles has released two CDs with his all-star trio on Enja/Yellowbird. First, there was Quiver, followed in 2014 by Circuit Rider and both discs, featuring the sublime interplay among Miles on cornet, Bill Frisell on guitar and Brian Blade on drums, are truly something to behold. On Saturday and Sunday, this incredible trio returns to Dazzle, 930 Lincoln, with sounds you don’t want to miss.
